Find Clean Beauty Products | Good Face Project

F.A.Q.

What determines a product's safety grade?

We use the weakest link approach. Every product is given the rating of its worst ingredient.

How is the GFP safety grade created?

Our algorithm creates an exhaustive and up-to-date aggregation of scientific reports from the fields of toxicology, botany, chemistry, and dermatology, about the ingredients of every product. Then it scans these papers for findings that indicate ingredient toxicity. Therefore, the GFP safety grade is not our opinion, just an aggregate of the available scientific facts.

How do you find a product's safe alternatives?

Our algorithm identifies your product's key ingredients. Then it searches our extensive clean beauty database to find products containing as many of these key ingredients as possible.

How do you rate each ingredient?

We scour and aggregate existing research that is available on PubMed, PubChem, published by the FDA or by a handful of international consumer and environmental protection agencies. We do not impart our own judgment. If we cannot find safety research on an ingredient, we do not recommend for or against it.

If an ingredient is rated A for safety, then is it completely safe?

Our ratings reflect existing research, nothing more, and nothing less. If research which lowers an ingredient's rating becomes available at a later time, we will be sure to let you know.

How does the Good Face Project make money?

Just like any product review website, we are reimbursed by online stores, such as Amazon, Sephora, and Credo Beauty for creating reviews that are useful to you, their shopper. If you research products with us and decide to buy based on our safety grades, we receive a fee for helping you with your research.
